"Second superpower," Googlewashing, and Chapter 3

Chapter 3 discusses Moore's blog article on "the second superpower". Writing up my notes within that chapter, I compiled a ton of URLs and figured I better make them linkable here:

• The Times originated the idea on 2/17/03, and the phrase was in play within the following week. Tyler’s original article is here, but the archive won’t cough up the article without payment; the text is mirrored here.
• The phrase “two world superpowers” was used on Hardball that evening.
• The specific phrase “A Second Superpower” is the title of an entry on a blog named Industrie Toulouse that same day, linked to the Times via This Modern World. I think Industrie Toulouse has the first chronological use of the phrase in this context.
• Press release from the Hague Appeal for Peace on 2/20
• Press release from Greenpeace, 2/25. (That scoop.co.nz site is a press-release collection point, but the Greenpeacers make it clear that that’s their text.)
• Even the Larouche-ians had the phrase online on 2/28, a month before Moore.
